I just read an article in Time Magazine titled 'How To Make Your Kids Smarter: 10 Steps Backed By Science.' I have two kids (ages 6 and 9), so naturally I was interested. Well, according to the article, the number one thing we can do to make our kids smarter (and adults too, for that matter) is to sign them up for Music Lessons!
It made me very happy to read this, being a piano teacher! I have an Honours Degree in Music and Philosophy from McMaster University and an ARCT Piano Associate Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Anyway, of course music lessons make you smarter because every area of the brain is used during a lesson: The Frontal Lobe (concentration, planning, problem solving, motor control), Parietal Lobe (touch and pressure, body awareness), Temporal Lobe (hearing, memory), Occipital Lobe (Vision), the Hypothalamus, Hippocampus, and Amygdala (emotions) and Cerebellum (coordination). And these areas of the brain are not just used, but they are actively engaged and integrated during the process of learning to play the piano.
Now, my students don't think about all that at a lesson - they just enjoy making music.
